DON’T OVERLOOK THESE THINGS WHEN PLANNING A GARAGE
Failing to plan, is planning to fail.
Planning your garage is a significant part of the process.
Avoiding these common mistakes ensures your garage is well-designed, functional, and future-proof. Adding value to your property and making your daily life more convenient.
Here are some common mistakes to avoid to ensure you end up with a garage that meets all your needs:
Underestimating Space Needs
Many homeowners plan garages that are just large enough to fit their vehicles. Overlooking the need for extra space. For storage, work areas, or future vehicle upgrades. Plan for enough space around the car.
Space for shelves, workbenches, and any equipment you may want to store. Such as snowblowers, bikes, yard tools and even a motorcycle.
Ignoring Ceiling Height
Standard garages may not be high enough. If you plan to store larger vehicles or install overhead storage or even a car lift.
Consider a higher ceiling if you want flexibility with storage.
Skipping Insulation and Ventilation
Insulating and ventilating your garage is essential. Especially if you’ll use it as a workspace. Proper insulation helps regulate temperature.
Making the garage usable year-round. While good ventilation prevents moisture buildup, mold, and odors.
Blown-in Insulation for the attic and spray foam insulation for the walls is ideal. But batt insulation is also suitable.
Neglecting Electrical Needs
Garages are often used for more than parking, so plan your electrical needs. Add enough outlets for tools, equipment, and charging stations. If you have an electric vehicle or plan on an electric vehicle later. Consider installing 240V outlets for heavy-duty tools or heaters.
Lights! If you do plan on using your garage as a workspace, you need lighting. Especially if you plan for higher ceilings. 2 little 100 w bulbs will not provide enough light to do anything. Consider lighting for workbenches and storage areas. Along with lighting to light up the entire garage.
Forgetting about Drainage
Garages are prone to moisture. When ice and snow melts off vehicles. Even water drips off vehicles during heavy rain. Ensure proper drainage to avoid water pooling.
Sloping the garage floor toward the garage door or installing a dry sump pit to collect water can help.
Not Planning for Future Needs
Plan how you may use the garage over time. If you plan to store more than one vehicle. Add a workshop, or keep seasonal equipment.
It’s better to design for these possibilities upfront. Rather than dealing with costly renovations later.
Choosing the Wrong Door Size or Style
Garage doors should be wide enough to fit your vehicles. Also, consider automatic doors for convenience. Check that there’s enough clearance for the door to open. Without hitting vehicles or stored items. Insulated doors are a must as well. Whether you plan to heat your garage or not. Large metal doors will hold frost and allow for cold to permeate your space.
Consider one door ot 2 (or 3). If you plan on using part of your garage as a workspace, you may want 2 doors instead of one large door. If one car is entering or leaving the garage. A smaller door will help keep in some of the heat while working on the other side.
Entry door. Plan for at least one entry door for yourself and family. Using the garage door to get in and out of your garage is not a good idea. Plan for that entry door to be visible from your home for security as well.
Overlooking Safety & Security
Garages often store valuable tools and equipment. Include secure locks and consider a security system with cameras.
Proper lighting, inside and out also helps deter theft. and ensures safe navigation at night.
Using Low-Quality Flooring
Garage floors need to withstand heavy use. Exposure to chemicals, water, and wear from vehicle tires. Choose durable flooring options, like epoxy or polished concrete.
They are more resistant to stains, cracks, and damage.
Neglecting Curb Appeal
While the function of your garage is key, its appearance should complement your home’s style. Choose materials and designs that enhance your property’s aesthetic.
Making the garage an attractive, cohesive part of your home.
