ICE & SNOW CONTROL

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY, VISITORS & SERVICE PEOPLE FROM SLIPS

Make it safe for people to visit your home.

Regardless of the season, you have a lot of people that come to your door.

Your family, neighbours, mail carriers, parcel couriers, food delivery and yourself.

In the winter time it can be very dangerous for people to walk up to your house. Sidewalks, driveways and stairs can all have ice form on them. Making them tricky to navigate.

If the ice is visible to people accessing your property. Making it easier for them to avoid or walk safety. But when ice is hidden under fresh snow it can be extremely dangerous.

Should you use Ice Melt or
Sand to manage ice?

Shovelling the snow is only one way to prevent ice build up. But when you do have too much ice, which is better, sand or ice melt?

Below we outline sand and ice melt options.

However, the best solution to preventing ice buildup is to keep the snow off your drive or walkway so that it won’t compact and freeze. Shovel or snow blow early and often.

Sand Or Ice Melt Sidewalks

ICE MELT

Using ice melt on your driveway and sidewalks can be a great way to prevent slippery surfaces. But it’s important to choose the right product.

Certain ice melt products can damage concrete, damage the plants/lawns or be harmful to pet.

Most commercial ice melts contain chemicals that can irritate or burn a dog’s paws, and can cause gastrointestinal issues if ingested.

Hot to prevent damage on Concrete?

  • Use a de-icer recommended for concrete
  • Apply ice melt at the recommended rate
  • Avoid using ice melt on concrete that’s less than a year old, or on concrete that’s chipped, cracked, or spalled
  • Treat concrete with a concrete sealer

SAND

Using sand on icy sidewalks is a great alternative to traditional ice melt, offering better traction and safety without the risks of chemical deicers.

Here’s why you should consider using sand during winter:

Improves Traction – Sand creates grip on slippery surfaces, reducing the risk of slips and falls.

Eco-Friendly – Unlike chemical deicers, sand won’t harm plants, pets, or the environment.

Non-Corrosive – Safe for concrete, metal, and vehicles—won’t cause the damage that salt-based ice melts can.

Affordable & Readily Available – Sand is inexpensive and easy to find at home improvement stores.

Works in Any Temperature – Unlike some ice melts that stop working in extreme cold, sand provides traction no matter how low the temperature drops.

The City provides free sand/salt mix at 19 sandboxes throughout Regina.
